Halloween 2011 pumpkin carvings

It's devil's night in the D. and anyone who grew up in the Detroit area knows that up here, we take halloween very seriously. I thought I would share a couple of this year's jack-o-lanterns that I just finished carving. In typical fashion, it all starts with a plan.

First, you find a decent image and due a little photoshop magic to convert it into a posterized image with three levels of grey. I did this with the old glory caster back in the challenge, but used 5 levels of grey. Then, the paper image is taped to the gourd.

Using my handy dandy little roller pokey thingy, I trace all of the edges of the pattern transferring the image to the pumpkin.

Remove the pattern and take a peek. Make sure everything is traced because putting the pattern back on isn't an option.

Now, take a sharpie and darken the lines. A sharpie works great and doesn't wear away with all the pumpkin juice that accumulates.

Gut the pumpkin next. save the seeds. they are gold.

Now, with cheapo saw tools and a cheapo wood carving tool, cut out the voids where the lightest color is and remove the peel from the middle grey areas.

clean up the surfaces of the greys with a broader faced chisel.

Drop in a candle and shut off the lights. Heeeeeeere's Johnny!

I've seen bold squirrels before, but this one set a new record. He ate a fallen tomato, stuck his head in Reverend Dave's (of Burger Conquest) beer, licked my almost-empty free hot chocolate cup clean (which, by the way, was fantastic—I think it's just heated up chocolate custard), and finally went away after I gave him a french fry, which he promptly ran up a tree and ate.

The ceremony falls right in the middle of Neil Diamond's Australian tour in March. Nothing is set yet, but Diamond hopes to re-shuffle some dates so he can make it. "I'll get in somehow," he says. John Outdid Himself

chicken tenders marinated in

Justin Wilson's Louisianna Chicken Wing Sauce

and chicken roll ups:

seasoned chicken tenders flattened into thin quarter inch cutlets
rolled with spinach, sweet red peppers

and feta cheese (made with goat's milk)

Cooked Outdoors Today

"Chef Perch"

Saturday was the first day this year that my John cooked outdoors

grilled...barbequed...whatever you want to call it

he uses a Weber grill, charcoal, and a charcoal starter

he cooked porterhouse steaks with Justin Wilson steak sauce

ocean perch fillets with fresh lemon slices

and baked potatoes

he did a very good job!

we tried out our local Big Boy restaurant last Saturday

we've both been at different locations before

a long time ago

but, not together

I had tender pot roast ~ covered with rich gravy-served with choice of potato or rice, garden vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli and carrots) and Texas toast

served with cole slaw or salad

I had mashed potatoes and salad

pot roast was very tender ~ comfort food

I went there with my folks when I was younger

it was the first time for my John

back then we used to get the special

ribs for two

John and I don't do pork, anymore

so, we both got the chicken and cod

you pick the chicken, BBQ or broasted

we tried both types of chicken

each selection served with our thick-sliced garlic bread

last Saturday, we tried out a very new local restaurant

only been open for a week

called Billy's Place

place was full

I guess the restaurant that

used to be there burned down

menu says

a friends and family favorite

we proudly present our

I had lemon artichoke chicken~marinated chicken breast sauteed in

Billy's special lemon sauce and topped with artichoke hearts

french fries

green beans

lettuce and tomato salad with Italian dressing

cabbage soup

homemade bread sticks and butter

my John had wet burrito~topped with chili, cheddar cheese,

sour cream, black olives, tomatoes, lettuce and green peppers

sour cream and salsa

tomato and lettuce salad with thousand island dressing

baked potato soup

homemade bread sticks and butter

breaded mushrooms <---shared

as long as they keep up the good work
